Advil, Nexium, and other prescription medications are among the most widely used drugs in the U. S. today, according to a new study.

The National Academies of Sciences (NAFS) released the results of an, which was released Wednesday with a view to revising the U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines on the use of prescription medications.

The study analyzed nearly 2,000 brand-name drugs in the United States, and found that more than 60 percent of the drugs were used to treat conditions that patients have never used.

The data show that most of the drugs used in the studies were used to treat the underlying causes of heart failure, cancer, cancer of the colon or lung, or heart attacks and strokes.

“We’re very excited about this new research that shows the potential of these medications to improve the quality of life for those who have heart failure,” said Dr. David M. Schreiber, a urology professor at the University of Michigan who is leading the study. “These findings raise questions about the potential benefits of prescription medications for people with heart failure.”

The FDA has been reviewing the data, which is part of the research and development process. It has been taking the data since at least April 2008.

The study found that nearly 60 percent of the drugs used in the studies were not effective enough to treat the underlying cause of heart failure, cancer, or heart attacks and strokes. But some of the drugs were so effective that they are used as a treatment for other conditions.

“Many of these drugs were not effective in treating the underlying cause of heart failure, cancer, or cancer of the colon or lung,” Schreiber said. “Many of these drugs were so effective that they were used as a treatment for other conditions, so they could help with other conditions in people who are at risk.”
